Un’s Iraq Envoy Meets With Senior Leaders In Falluja
New York, Feb 21 2006
The United Nations top envoy to Iraq, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, met with officials in the city of Falluja today to discuss the concerns of the people living in that violence-torn city.
During meetings with Mayor Dhari Al-Zawbaai, City Council members and local dignitaries, Mr. Qazi listened to the local population’s concerns, particularly the issue of compensation for losses stemming from fighting and human rights issues, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said today in a statement released in Baghdad.
Mr. Qazi, who serves as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Iraq, was accompanied by UNAMI officials dealing with these issues as well as a representative of the UN humanitarian agencies in Iraq.
Mr. Qazi reiterated the UN’s commitment to help all Iraqi people and promised to work with the Mayor to explore ways to support people living in Falluja.
Yesterday, Mr. Qazi met with officials in Al-Ramadi in Al-Anbar province to discuss a wide range of concerns from agriculture to human rights.
