UN delivers medical aid to victims of Baghdad bridge tragedy
The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has begun delivering help, including emergency oxygen units and
drugs, after about 1,000 pilgrims, many of them women and children, died and many others were injured in the crush of a
crowd crossing a bridge over the Tigris River in Baghdad yesterday.
In addition to the oxygen units supplied to nine hospitals, the Mission has also provided enough health kits to treat
1,000 people, Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Deputy Special Representative, Steffan De Mistura, said today.
UNAMI is also supplying large amounts of emergency drugs and is organizing special financial support for the families of
all the victims, he added.
