In Visit To Dpr Of Korea, Unicef Chief To Spotlight Children’s Needs
The head of the United Nations children’s agency will pay a three-day visit this weekend to the Democratic People’s
Republic of Korea (DPRK), where UN agencies recently warned that millions of people could go hungry this year unless
additional donations arrive soon.
The visit beginning Saturday by Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), will highlight
results for children that are being achieved with the agency’s support in DPRK, as well as the challenges that remain.
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) warned last month that despite a stop-gap resumption of food aid to the hungriest of
the hungry in the DPRK, 1.5 million people would still go short over the next six weeks and millions more would be
deprived in the second half of the year without speedy additional donations.
At least 6.5 million people out of a total population of are 22.6 million are considered most at risk.
