New York, Feb 19 2004 4:00PM
The United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) has arrested members of a militia suspected of planning an attack near a market in the eastern province of Ituri and involved in an exchange of shots that wounded an investigating UN military officer.
When the MONUC patrol arrived on Wednesday at Kasenyi, some 50 kilometres east of Bunia militiamen fled, firing on the patrol and injuring a military officer.
Searching the area, MONUC found weapons in a house and 13 members of a not still unidentified militia, some of them armed with AK-47s. The patrol also seized weapons and munitions.
