ISM Press Conf at UN - Tues, May 13, 11am - Palestinbe Freedom Summer
Press Conference Tues., May 13 At Un: International Solidarity Movement To Announce Freedom Summer Campaign 2003
Plans to continue despite threats by Israeli government
The International Solidarity Movement will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. on Tues., May 13, at the United Nations' Correspondent Association, located in the UN Headquarters building in Manhattan. Huwaida Arraf, a co-founder of the ISM, and Adam Shapiro, an ISM organizer, will outline plans for the second ISM Freedom Summer, July 1-Aug. 15. They and peace activists planning to participate in the summer campaign will talk about the importance of an international presence in Palestine.
In spite of recent deadly attacks on international human rights activists in the Occupied West Bank and Gaza and Israel's announcement of a plan to refuse entry to "pro-Palestinian" activists, the ISM will continue its campaign. Concerned individuals from around the world will travel to Palestine this summer to participate in nonviolent direct action in support of Palestinian human rights.
Huwaida Arraf has been an activist in Palestine for almost three years. She has helped organize and coordinate ISM activities, campaigns, and actions, and led the group of internationals that entered the Church of the Nativity last year to stop the Israeli siege. Adam Shapiro has helped organize nonviolent direct action protests against Israeli occupation forces as well as accompaniment for Palestinian medical personnel and civilians during Israeli sieges of Palestinian cities. He made headlines last year after bringing medical attention to injured Palestinians in Yasser Arafat's besieged compound, then was denied exit by Israeli forces. Both Adam and Huwaida are U.S. citizens.
Please note: Journalists who would like to attend the press conference and are not presently accredited to the UN must obtain temporary accreditation for the event by contacting the UN Media Accreditation and Liaison Unit, at (212) 963-4642.
