ISM Activists Protect Gaza Hospital at Request of UNAIS and Hospital Director
The United Nations Association International Service (UNAIS) and the Medical Director of Al-Wasa Hospital have requested that the ISM send a team of activists to protect Al-Wasa Rehabilitation Hospital after it was attacked last night by the Israeli Army.
At 11.45 last night a house 70 metres from the hospital was destroyed by a missile fired from an Israeli attack helicopter.
At 12.15 two of the hospital's nurses were killed by Israeli soldiers who had occupied a residential building across the street. Abdul al-Karim Lobbad (21) and Omar Hassan (21) were both killed by a single bullet fired through a hospital window.
The hospital accommodates 50 patients with serious disabilities and cares for around 100 other patients on a day care basis. It is clearly marked as a hospital with signs that can be seen from 400 metres away.
The ISM is sending 3 volunteers from the UK and the US to provide an international presence in the hospital so that it can keep functioning.
