PACIFIC JOURNALISTS WIN FOUR PMI SCHOLARSHIPS

SUVA (USP's Pacific Journalism Online): A Fiji Islands news magazine editor and a journalist from a Catholic newspaper
in Tonga have won AusAID scholarships at the University of the South Pacific under the Pacific Media Initiative for
2001, project officials have announced.
The PMI project has awarded a total of four scholarships at Pacific universities this year.
Shailendra Singh, editor of Fiji's The Review monthly news and business magazine and a content editor for the country's
leading website, fijilive, has won a semester-long scholarship on USP's MBA programme.
He is committed to strengthening business and financial reporting in Fiji.
'Ana Tapueluelu, a journalist with a newspaper published by the Catholic diocese of Tonga, Taumu'a Lelei, has been
awarded a one-year scholarship towards a BA in Journalism degree at USP.
Two other year-long scholarships have been awarded at Papua New Guinea institutions.
Mana Make Bagu, broadcaster and principal coordinator of broadcast training at PNG's National Broadcasting Corporation
(NBC), has won a scholarship at the University of PNG to complete a Certificate in Public Relations at the school of
journalism studies.
He is seeking an upgrade in his skills for training his staff on working in a corporate or privatised work environment.
A National journalist, Ennio Kuble, won a scholarship for a BA degree in journalism studies at Divine Word University.
He completed a diploma in journalism last year.
This is the second year that the PMI tertiary media scholarship has been run and project management officials hope to
continue the scheme next year.
"We received 15 applications this year and there were more than 30 inquiries," said project director Dr Helen Molnar.
"While we did not get as many applications as last year - 18, the quality of the applications has improved."
