SUBJECT: ETHIOPIA COOL TO KOSOVO INDEPENDENCE
REF: STATE 13716
1. (SBU) Ambassador spoke with State Minister Tekeda Alemu
February 12, 2008 on the anticipated independence of Kosovo.
Tekeda replied that Ethiopia has not given great thought to
this issue, but would be hesitant to make any statement for
or against this pronouncement. Tekeda opined that the Serbs
would bitterly oppose this move and asked the nature of the
actions they may take, which could possibly include a violent
reaction. Tekeda stated that there are too many unknowns for
Ethiopia to make any decision, and that for now they will not
make any statement nor take any stance.
