1. (SBU) Embassy Tokyo Political Officer conveyed reftel
nonpaper to MOFA UN Policy Division Director Shigeki Takizaki
December 27. Takizaki, in turn, confirmed press reports that
the Government of Japan had already informed Iran that it
would impose sanctions from January 2007, pursuant to UNSCR
1737. In a December 25 telephone conversation, Foreign
Minister Taro Aso conveyed to Iranian FM Motaki Japan's
decision to impose sanctions and called upon Iran to suspend
all uranium enrichment activities and return to negotiations.
Motaki, however, rejected the appeal, Takizaki confirmed.
2. (SBU) Takizaki separately requested that the United
States provide further information on the specific nature and
scope of sanctions that the United States intends to impose
on Iran. Such information would assist MOFA in its dealings
with other relevant agencies, he explained.
