SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION - GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM: FIFTH ANNIVERSAY
OF 9/11
1. On September 11, business and financial daily "Diario Financiero"
(circ. 30,000) carried an op-ed by international commentator Libardo
Buitrago entitled, "9-11-2001: Five Years Later." Quote:
"The principal effect of the September 11 attacks...was an
overwhelming deep and strong rejection that led to a different
understanding of the phenomenon of indiscriminate violence by groups
that want to divide the global consensus on this means to attain
power.... But terrorism, as all bad news, causes a strong but
short-term reaction. The strong signals and harsh remarks made by
leaders after the attacks have been forgotten.... The global fight
against terrorism must be ongoing and involve all nations."
2. On September 10, conservative, independent "La Tercera" (circ.
101,000) carried an editorial entitled "Five Years alter S-11, A new
Paradigm." Quote:
"There are few events that we can say have led to 'historical
changes,' but judging from a Pew Research Center Poll conducted
shortly after the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001,
that attack is one of them.... Unlike the 1990s, which marked the
end of the Cold War and the absence of an actor to put order to the
system..., the world after 9/11 faces a radical Islamic terrorist
threat that defines the new international paradigm, which has been
reinforced by the attacks in Madrid and London. Just as during the
Cold War, the fight was between capitalism and communism served as
the framework to explain and understand the world..., the clash
between the West and Islamic terrorists help 'explain' much of what
is happening in the world today. This is what the 19 terrorists
left behind five years ago."
