Grim weather and a Desert Road closure didn’t deter 36 cyclists from around New Zealand who travelled to Taupo last weekend for the inaugural BNZ Trainer Wheels camp as part of the Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.
The BNZ Trainer Wheels programme is aimed at beginner cyclists who are attempting their first Cycle Challenge, either as a member of a relay team or as a solo rider.
“Feedback from the entrants was extremely positive – they all appreciated the effort put in by the Taupo Cycle Club and the other volunteers,” said Keith Crate, Event Director.
“Over the weekend, they learnt basic bike mechanics and practical and theoretical bike riding tips,” said Crate.
Entries for Cycle Challenge on November 28 are tracking very well with over 1500 people entered in the Linfox Tarmac Relay and more than 2400 riders tackling the BNZ Solo event. In its second year, the Contact Huka Challenge is proving to be popular again with over 130 mountain bike riders entered.
