Grants support top Antarctic scientists to attend international conference
New Zealand Antarctic Research Institute (NZARI) will provide 20 travel grants of up to $2,500 for early career New
Zealand researchers to present their work at one of the world’s top Antarctic science conferences in Malaysia this year.
The Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR) conference brings together top Antarctic researchers from across
the world.
“The conference focuses on sharing new advances in Antarctic research, and how changes that we are currently seeing in
Antarctica will affect the rest of the world,” says NZARI Director Prof Gary Wilson.
“New Zealand is well respected for its Antarctic Research programme and ensuring our researcher community has a strong
presence at conferences such as this is essential to maintaining New Zealand’s reputation and continuing to develop
international collaborations, which are so vital to Antarctic Research, says Prof Wilson. The grants ensure that this is
possible”.
SCAR was hosted in Auckland during 2014 attracting more than 1000 scientists to the city. It showcased the caliber of
New Zealand’s Antarctic science expertise and the significance that our 60 year presence on the frozen continent holds
within the international community.
The 2014 SCAR committee recently received a New Zealand Tourism award in recognition of the conference’s success in
raising New Zealand’s international profile, encouraging knowledge transfer and generating opportunities for trade and
investment, all of which are invaluable for the future development of New Zealand.
