InternetNZ to host IPv6 workshop

InternetNZ (The Internet Society of New Zealand) will host a technical workshop next week on IPv6 - the next generation
Internet addressing protocol.
The five day workshop runs from 6 – 10 August 2007. It is being sponsored by InternetNZ, FX Networks and the Crown-owned
REANNZ (Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand).
The technical workshop is being delivered by two offshore experts on IPv6 - Faraz Shamim from Cisco Systems and Gaurab
Upadaya from Packet Clearing House.
InternetNZ Councillor Jonny Martin says the workshop provides an excellent opportunity for technically-minded people to
get hands-on IPv6 experience from these two world experts.
A range of technical issues will be covered including IPv6 design and addressing, IPv6 neighbour discovery, IPv6
stateless auto-configuration and mobile IPv6. Much of the workshop will involve hands-on work with network equipment
from Cisco Systems.
With IPv4 addresses predicted to run out between late 2009 and 2011 the aim of the workshop is to encourage awareness
and deployment of IPv6 among network operators, says Martin.
IPv6 has several benefits over IPv4 the current Internet protocol version, says Martin. “It provides a much larger
address space, which will be required if we wish to see the internet to continue to grow in the way it has to date.”
REANNZ Operations Manager Mark Cordy says all of New Zealand will eventually benefit from the implementation of IPv6.
“The KAREN network (Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network) is the first in New Zealand with international native
IPv6 capabilities, so in the short-term our research and education sector will benefit from being compatible with their
Asian and European collaborators and technology companies.”
