NZ bioinformatics company hits No1 on Apple website
AUCKLAND, 21 April 2006: A new bioinformatics product launched by New Zealand company Biomatters has gone straight to
first place as the most downloaded software on Apple’s Math and Science website in just two days.
“It’s becoming clear our development team have created something special,” said Daniel Batten, CEO of Biomatters, whose
Geneious 1.0 software was launched on Wednesday.
“The high download rate matches the already positive endorsement we have had on the beta version of Geneious from
scientists all over the world.”
Geneious 1.0 greatly simplifies and speeds up bioinformatics tasks including sequence alignment using publicly
accessible genetic databases now accessed by over one million researchers.
The beta version was quickly adopted for university courses in Germany and Australia and made its debut in the top three
of Apple’s “Hot Picks”.
Among many researchers around the world who welcomed it as “long awaited”, Professor Stefan Könemann at the University
of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover in Germany said his students,”unanimously voted Geneious as the best for ease of
use.”
Geneious is being developed by a team led by Dr Alexei Drummond.
Mr Batten said they aim to develop software that will contribute to significantly speeding up research and
identification of potential new treatments.

Biomatters plans to release a commercial version, Geneious Pro, later this year.
