Change of Seasons
MetService meteorologists have issued a heavy snowfall warning for the central North Island, just in time for this
week's formal start to the winter months of June, July and August. Significant amounts of snow are forecast for the
higher parts of the plateau including the Desert Road until Tuesday morning.
"It's all because of a low-pressure system deepening near the Chatham Islands", explained MetService Weather Ambassador,
Bob McDavitt. "This will bring cold southwest winds over the country for the week, but at this stage they are expected
to relax over the North Island during Queen's Birthday weekend."
McDavitt warned that on Thursday and Friday southwest winds are likely to reach severe gale force for a time about
exposed coasts.
Tonight's snow and Thursday's and Friday's winds may bring hazardous driving conditions, so travellers are advised to
keep up to date with the latest forecasts.
