‘Bright Future’ Positive for New Zealand Women

Published: Mon 23 Aug 1999 04:23 PM
The Government’s Bright Future plan for a knowledge economy is an exciting opportunity for young New Zealand women, according to Young Nationals spokesperson Catherine Moody.
This is despite some of the bizarre criticism from the New Zealand Universities Students Association. To describe the programme as ‘sexist’ and ‘privatisation’ shows their complete ignorance and ideological blindness” said Ms Moody.
“Women’s futures depends on having choices and opportunities, and having the means to make their own decisions. This is exactly what Bright Future is about. Students don’t want excessive handouts – we are prepared to contribute towards our education. What this package does is encourage talented young men and women to succeed, to prosper and contribute to society."
Ms Moody says the only correct fact in NZUSA’s hysterical press releases is that women are under-represented in the science and technology areas. “NZUSA should therefore be thrilled at the extra support announced yesterday. More scholarships and study awards are available, and there are increased bursary and enterprise awards available to students from all disciplines.”
“NZUSA co-president Karen Skinner complains that no-one pays attention to her figure of 51 years for women to pay off a student loan. The reason why everyone ignores this figure is because it’s completely wrong,” said Ms Moody. “Even more ridiculous is their continued paranoia over privatisation. How many times does the Government has to tell them this isn’t going to happen? Do we have to use sign language?”
