Responding to Thames-Coromandel Mayor Sandra Goudie’s comments on the Local Government Leaders' Climate Change Declaration, Taxpayers’ Union Spokesman Garrick Wright-McNaughton says:
“It is a breath of fresh air to see a Mayor take the common sense approach to put ratepayers first. Instead of signing
away the Council’s future autonomy, the Mayor has suggested that it would be irresponsible to sign the Declaration
without any certainty of what future ratepayers will be bound to.”
“Councils primarily exist to deliver good quality infrastructure - roading, water, and on occasion, refuse collection.
Climate change may be the flavour of the day but it should not be used as a political tool to dig deeper into
ratepayers’ pockets.”
