The Productivity Commission’s latest inquiry should be about how to make Councils more efficient, not helping them
gather even more revenue, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.
Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says, “Instead of investigating how to improve local government
efficiency – to deliver good quality core services at a reasonable cost – the Government is has narrowed the question to
how councils can dig deeper into ratepayer pockets more efficiently.”
“The inquiry also calls into question the Government’s unfair plans to let Auckland Council introduce an unfair regional
fuel tax. In comparison to rates, fuel taxes disproportionately affect those who can least afford to pay more.”
