Greg O’Connor supports council purchase of Forest of Tane
“After spending time walking through the ‘Forest of Tane’ on Tawa’s western hills, and attending a large public meeting
of concerned citizens, I am absolutely convinced that the council should purchase the so called ‘Forest of Tane’ to
preserve what is an oasis of nature and green in an urban landscape” the Ohariu Labour candidate Greg O’Connor said
today.
Mr O’Connor was referring to a proposal being considered by the Wellington City Council to purchase the block which has
recently come on the market.
“Walking through the forest, and seeing the work which has been put in to cut tracks and eradicate pests by locals, it
is clear that the community has invested sufficiently to show there is a commitment to integrate the forest as an asset,
both as a regional park, but also to serve as a buffer between the community and the Spicer Landfill, acting as a filter
against odour rising from that facility” Mr O’Connor went on to say.
Mr O’Connor strongly urged the council to commit to purchasing the block, saying such long term thinking would benefit
generations of not only Tawa residents, but the whole Wellington region, for generations to come.
He said he would be following the issue closely and would remain involved whatever the outcome.
