Hundreds turn out to support New Zealand People’s Party launch
“We want change! We want change!” That was the chant at the Mt Roskill Fickling Convention Centre last night where a crowd of over 300 supporters were in attendance for the official launch of the New Zealand People’s Party.
The party president and candidate in the upcoming Mt Roskill By-Election, Mr Roshan Nauhria had just outlined his vision for his candidacy and the party in a stirring speech that was greeted with much excitement from the crowd.
“When a large group of students with legitimate concerns about their education take the time to come to see me I won’t turn my back, I will make time for them no matter what the issue, big or small. This is the change that I offer you as a candidate and this is the change that the members of the New Zealand People’s Party stand for”.
The launch was a show of enthusiasm and unity for the the party from the Mt Roskill community with Samoan, Chinese and Indian performances. The number in attendance was more than organisers had expected with the ticketed fire warden issuing a warning that if any more arrived they would have to be stay outside for safety concerns.
Safety was a primary focus for the launch with Mr Nauhria outlining the increase in crime as a main policy focus for the party, “This year there were 11,000 more victims of crime in the country compared to the same period last year. Burglaries are up by 12%, why is that? I will tell you why, the people committing these crimes know more and more that they have a good chance of getting away with it and never being caught. We have to change that.”
Change and it’s effect on Mt Roskill as a community resonated in a positive manner all evening and it was with Mr Nauhria’s final words that the crowd was sent into rapturous chanting; “Change is not coming, it is here, it’s right in front of me and tonight it is all around you, we are the change. On December 3rd the people of Mt Roskill have a choice, I am asking them tonight to make the choice for everyone and send a clear message: Mt Roskill wants change.”
