cut-throat corporate ladder?
Presented by Future Dragonz Wellington, Is There a Bamboo Ceiling in New Zealand? will launch our Slanted series - a lively conversation platform that tackles the myths and realities of employee discrimination in modern day
corporate New Zealand. The event raises the question whether certain, invisible factors —a bamboo ceiling— exclude
Chinese in New Zealand from aspiring and rising to executive leadership roles. It takes place on Thursday 6 October at
the New Zealand Reserve Bank Museum in Wellington.
“This is a conversation first for Wellington, led by young Chinese young professionals in the region passionate about
the topic. Our three talented speakers (Guan Yu, Richard Foy and Ngan Nguyen) will respond to some bold questions: Does
an English surname increase your career prospects over a Chinese one? Are Chinese viewed as diligent, technical workers,
but lacking in social and emotional intelligence to make it as managers, leaders and board members?”, says event
co-organiser Peter Ngan.
“We hope to empower struggling Chinese young professionals and arm them with a practical toolkit to crack the bamboo
ceiling. During the event, the audience will also be given an opportunity to examine its reactions towards the issues
presented,” he adds.
This stimulating topic will appeal to young professionals, senior tertiary students, corporate managers and anyone
curious about cultural stereotyping in today’s workforce.
