10,000 homes to be built in Auckland
The title may be slightly deceiving semantically, but factually accurate. Nick Smith yesterday announced his first
"magic bus tour" land packages, totaling 30ha approximately. Avondale, Manukau, Massey and Hobsonville are the areas
that have been currently unveiled, along with subtly mentioning that there is a "possibility" (I use possibility loosely
as if I were a betting man I'd place money on this happening) several hundred government houses will be demolished to
make way for terraced housing. Now the remaining 470ha hasn't been announced yet, however much speculation is of this
being land being in South Auckland, specifically in Wiri, Manukau and Manurewa.
A lot of people are getting exceptionally exciting about these proposed land packages and what they will do to help the
housing market within Auckland, especially as in addition to this other private developments have a further 5,000 homes
on the cards in the 18 months. Though let's say there are 15,000 more houses in Auckland, this doesn't make up for the
influx of people moving to Auckland.
With an expected population increase of 18,000 people in the next two years due solely to immigration, along with many
houses being purchased by overseas investors it is clear to see that Nick Smith's plans aren't actually helping the
problem at all.
So what next? The dream of owning a home for many young families is certainly out of reach in Auckland, however when
will this have an overflow effect on the rest of the country and how will this impact the housing market going forwards,
because from where I am sitting, this bubble doesn't show any signs of bursting.
