Tamati Coffey (Rotorua electorate) and Rawiri Waititi (Waiariki electorate) selected as Labour candidates
Labour Party President Moira Coatsworth has announced that Tamati Coffey will be Labour’s candidate for the Rotorua
electorate at the 2014 General Election, and that Rawiri Waititi will be Labour’s candidate for the Waiariki electorate
at the election. They were each selected from fields of three nominees at consecutive meetings held at Rotorua Primary
School on Saturday. The meetings attracted over 200 Party members.
Moira Coatsworth said today:
“A great crowd of Labour members from Maori and general electorates attended these selection meetings. They heard
inspiring responses to questions put by members, and outstanding speeches from the six nominees for the two electorates.
Labour’s performance in our provinces is crucial to a win in 2014, and candidates of this quality will make all the
difference."
Tamati Coffey said today:
“I’m honoured to be selected by Labour here in Rotorua, but it was never a given. I had to compete against some great
nominees - that’s what democracy is all about and that’s what Labour is all about. Now it’s game-on in Rotorua! This
seat is officially up for grabs and I want to take it. I want to be Rotorua’s voice in Parliament as Labour delivers on
its plans for more local jobs, for the revitalisation of forestry and for the best start for Rotorua’s kids and
tamariki”.
Rawiri Waititi said today:
“Maori development is the name of the game in the Waiariki electorate, and Labour is the party to deliver the sorely
needed good jobs for our region. I am a keen and proven advocate for the issues that matter to people and communities in
the Waiariki electorate. Preserving our natural taonga is a high priority for me; as is education, which is becoming a
big election issue. Hoki mai ki te pati Reipa – it is time for us to return to Labour”.
