Just One Punch Campaign a step in the right direction
The Sensible Sentencing Trust (SST) applauds the Dunedin Police ‘Just One Punch’ campaign launched this week. The
campaign, aimed at the potential consequences of a single punch, will coincide with student orientation.
“This is a wonderful example how local communities can help prevent crime and tragedy,” Garth McVicar SST Spokesperson
says.
This comes after the 2011 death of a Dunedin man, Steve Radnoty (51) back in 2011 who was killed outside a McDonald’s
restaurant after being punched in an unprovoked attack.
“In recent years we have observed a significant increase in this type of violence that has seen countless people
affected,” McVicar says. “Initiatives such as the ‘Just One Punch’ are educating the public on how serious street
fighting is.”
The campaign is funded by the Accident Compensation Corporation and was supported by the Otago Polytechnic, the
University of Otago (and its student association), the Dunedin City Council, the Highlanders, TVNZ, Newsplash Studio,
Otago Corrections and the Southern District Health Board.
“It just goes to show that when there’s a good idea, that will genuinely help others, the true community spirit shines,”
he says. McVicar also encourages other communities to start initiatives that will help educate and prevent crime.
The campaign will also highlight the link between consuming excessive alcohol and assaults that cause death. It is hoped
this will help people make better choices while drinking and socializing with friends.
