Scams Emerge after Typhoon Haiyan Strikes the Philippines
The events in the Philippines have led to calls for help being raised by several governments and NGOs worldwide. While many legitimate donation requests are being posted on social networks and other popular websites, sadly, scammers have already started taking advantage of the situation by sending email messages containing fake donation requests. Symantec has seen similar tactics around past tragedies, such as the Fukushima disaster and Hurricane Sandy, and expect additional scams to emerge in the coming days.
Symantec recommends taking the following precautions when making online donations:
1. Be extra vigilant while opening such unsolicited emails.
2. Verify the authenticity of the organisation to which you are transferring the funds.
3. Do not respond to emails that demand for your personal and confidential information.
A blog post from Symantec’s security researchers outlines the scams, how they work and provides screenshots of existing scams. We are sharing the information so the public can stay vigilant and protected against these threats, so that the funds reach the victims in need.
