India under the spotlight at New Zealand conference
India’s economic growth over the past 60 years and the country’s increasingly globalised position will be the focus of
an upcoming two-day international conference hosted by the New Zealand India Research Institute.
Based at Victoria University, the Institute is a consortium of seven New Zealand universities which was formed in 2012
to promote Indian studies in this country. The conference, to formally launch the Institute, will be held at Victoria’s
Pipitea Campus in downtown Wellington on 28 and 29 August.
Hon. Steven Joyce, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, will formally launch the Institute and open
the conference.
The keynote address will be delivered by Kaushik Basu, Senior Vice President for Development Economics and Chief
Economist at the World Bank. Until recently, Mr Basu was the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India. He is on
leave from Cornell University where he is Professor of Economics and the C. Marks Professor of International Studies.
Mr Basu’s keynote address is titled ‘India’s economy in a globalising world: challenges and research agenda’. Other
sessions at the conference include:
· Anthony D’Costa, Chair and Professor of Contemporary Indian Studies, University of Melbourne, on ‘Compressed
capitalism, globalisation, and the fate of Indian development’
· Arun Elias, Senior Lecturer, Victoria University’s School of Management on ‘Analysing offshore IT outsourcing in a
changing India’
Amitabh Mattoo, Director of the Australia India Institute, on Indian foreign policy
