Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) border staff got the opportunity to meet the Easter bunny up close yesterday.
Well, the soft toy looked a lot like the Easter bunny and it is that time of year.
The owner declared the bunny at Auckland airport after arriving from overseas. It was found to be carrying seeds in a
small basket.
A quarantine inspector removed the seeds and the bunny was returned to its owner.
MPI staff are on alert for Easter-related items arriving in New Zealand with passengers and by mail, says Steve Gay, MPI
Operational Support Coordinator.
“We get a lot of Easter things like eggs and vine baskets coming through the border at this time of year. They may seem
harmless, but they pose biosecurity risk to our economy and environment.”
