Chandler encourage MP’s to vote to keep drinking age 18
Christchurch, New Zealand, 30 August 2011 - Today former Christchurch Central Candidate and 2013 Christchurch City Local Government Candidate Luke Chandler
announces he supports the drinking age to remain at 18.
Chandler says we live in a time where it we shouldn’t be nannied around into our drinking habits, there is no denying
New Zealand has a binge drinking culture. But to say that an 18 year old is legally allowed to vote, have sex, get
married gamble to name a few, but cannot go to the pub or buy a box to have a good time is absurd and an abuse of power
of the New Zealand Parliament when there is a big support for keeping it 18.
20 years ago you mainly stuck to the same age group of friends, but thanks to the ease of communication in todays works,
16 year olds are friends with people 18, 19 even 20. So what is the law going to achieve? Very little.
Chandler believes raising the drinking age to 20, or split age will just force 18 year olds to have their parents,
friends and other family members to buy them alcohol.
Luke Chandler was a candidate in the 2011 New Zealand General Election standing as an Independent in Christchurch
Central obtaining 138 votes in an electorate (pre special vote count) that has it’s first dead tie in decades. Chandler
is planning to stand for election to the Christchurch City Council as a councilor. He will not be seeking election for
Mayor.
