There is a great saying from a Tohunga from our pah “e kore e rere te miro ki te Manu…” a suggestion that indeed the
berry does not fly to the bird and that through persistence and work that we can achieve. However when those words were
spoken we indeed had low unemployment, allowed to live seasonal with the land, and were in full possessions of our
Resources. For today however the picture and indeed the story is very different.
My name is Clinton Dearlove and I am of Ngapuhi and Waitaha descent. I am a 38 year old father of two beautiful children
Anitanaha and Whitirua. My experience of 10 years in the secondary school system has given me an insight to many of the
issues that are facing our children. I also studied medicine at Auckland medical School and gained an honours degree in
Science from Otago University.
I have therefore a huge interest in the Health of our nation. My interaction with great programmes such as
EvnviroSchools and Mauri Tau and the inherent respect I learnt from both my Maori mother and European father for the
land and mana motuhake makes me an advocate for Te Tai Ao.
I also had the pleasure of working with the Kaumatua and Kuia of Waitaha and Ngapuhi during the 1040 and 1940 Waitangi
claims. Which furthered my interest in both the Te Tiriti o Waitangi me te Whakaputanga.
I have faith in the spirit of both documents and believe that through education we can move forward as a nation.
I believe that Mana has the potential to encourage and uplift our people.
