SuperCity staff savings must not be wasted

SuperCity staff savings must not be wasted.
The news that more than 1200 current council employees will have no jobs in the new Auckland Council is obviously bad news for those people, even though most will receive redundancy compensation.
These estimated cost savings should carry through to future years – unless a spendthrift inclined new Auckland Council decides to put those savings into some new projects.
While those who have lost their jobs deserve our sympathy I am sure they would not like to see the financial savings arising from their misfortune being frittered away by irresponsible expenditure.
Both leading mayoral candidates are pledging to keep rates low – this reduction in employment costs will give them the impetus to honour those pledges.
Ratepayers will be looking to rates increases of no more than the rate of inflation.
