Stratford Mayoral Election
Neil Volzke, the current Mayor of the Stratford District, has confirmed that he will be a candidate for the Mayors’ position at this year’s local body elections.
Neil was first elected to council in 2001 as an urban ward councillor. He was re-elected in 2004 and again in 2007. At the 2007 election he was elected to the position of Deputy Mayor serving under the late Mayor John Edwards.
When John Edwards became ill in early 2009, Neil deputised for him until he passed away in August 2009. This forced a by-election and in November 2009 Neil was elected as District Mayor, shutting out his opponent at that time.
“The eight months I’ve been Mayor have been everything I expected and more. There is seldom a dull moment and the challenges are often demanding” he said.
“Being mayor is an amazing privilege and the community involvement you have in a small district like ours is very rewarding”
The construction of the Stratford Health Centre is an important project Neil wants to see completed. It is an important part of the maintenance of quality Health Services in the District which is essential for our community.
Neil has also been heavily involved in the plans to build a community house for social services in Stratford. He chairs the Community House Trust. Construction of the house is due to commence this month.
Challenges ahead include the replacement of the town’s water treatment station and expanded water reservoir. There is also an ongoing need to keep growing the districts economic base to create jobs and keep people in our district.
Neil lives in Stratford, is married to Debbie and has three adult children. Neil is 55 years old.
