Farmers Workers to Demonstrate in Wellington
November 6, 2008
Media Release from the National Distribution Union
Workers from the Lower Hutt and Wellington Farmers stores will demonstrate for a better pay deal in Cuba Mall tomorrow.
NDU retail sector secretary Maxine Gay says Farmers have made a pay offer that means most staff will only be about 20cents a week better off.
“We will be letting customers know how poorly Farmers pay their staff and inviting them to tell Farmers to stop being so miserable,” she says.
Ms Gay says the union wants the company to pay a minimum rate of $15 an hour.
“The company doesn’t seem to understand that if every employer paid as low as they do, nobody would be able to afford to spend money in their stores.
“Farmers are not pulling their weight as a responsible player in the economy.”
