The grandfather of a young Matamata boy killed in a tragic accident on Sunday has asked for privacy as his family carry
out his grandson's funeral and grieve.
The boy, 18-month-old Ashton Jacob Waters, died in Waikato Hospital from injuries suffered after being struck by a
reversing car.
He had been with his parents in the front of their Matamata property when he ran after one of the family's cats, out the
gate of his parent's home, to the driveway of a neighbour's as a 17-year-old man was reversing his car down the drive.
Red Wooten said Ashton's family had been inundated with media calls and, where possible had facilitated request for
information but it was now time privacy.
The driver of the car and his extended family had met with Ashton's family and passed on their sympathies and
condolences in a private meeting.
The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident, no decision has been made on what if any charges will be
laid in relation to the incident.
