Hopes raised that TEAR Fund’s partners can resume work in Zimbabwe
TEAR Fund NZ executive director Stephen Tollestrup welcomes the signing of a memorandum of understanding between
Zimbabwe’s leaders. He hopes it will lead to a peaceful resolution and that TEAR Fund’s partners will be able to resume
operations again after the government suspended all NGOs from working there last month.
President Robert Mugabe (Zanu -PF) and opposition leader Morgan Tsangirai Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) signed
the MOU in Harare last night which will set the backdrop for power-sharing talks.
“The people of Zimbabwe need a resolution quickly as they face a growing hunger following a bad harvest, escalating
inflation (2.2 million per cent) and few jobs. It is therefore imperative that NGOs can resume their work as soon as
possible,” said Mr Tollestrup.
