Family Party to oppose carbon tax
Speaking at the Prayer in Parliament political forum last night, Family Party leader Richard Lewis said the party was unconvinced that carbon based taxes were justified or necessary.
“The Family Party is very passionate about protecting New Zealand’s clean green image and care deeply about our environment. But we are not buying into the political frenzy around global warming and hold very real concerns about the implications for New Zealand families and businesses through intended carbon taxes and current Kyoto obligations,” he said.
The Family Party wants a Royal Commission of enquiry to examine and establish the legitimacy of man-made global warming claims. In addition, the party wants to review New Zealand’s Kyoto obligations.
“Based on our research - the facts around global warming are far from being established. And certainly not to the point where interventions of the kind Government have in mind, such as taxing New Zealand families and businesses, can be justified,” he added.
The Family Party will release its environment policy in May.
