Reducing our carbon footprint, reducing stress levels
People working in Wellington’s CBD are being invited to participate in a fun new lunch time tree-potting initiative at
Midland Park next week that will reduce Wellington’s ecological footprint and provide a break from the busy work day.
The Downtown Eco Therapy team will provide all materials including aprons and gloves for people to pot their seedlings
between 12 midday and 1.30pm on 12 March, 2008, weather permitting.
The seedlings are from the Southern Environment Association’s native plant nursery and will be used to restore a former
landfill site.
Downtown Eco Therapy, believed to be a world first, is being supported by the Wellington City Council, Victoria
University, Wellington Regional Council, Ministry for the Environment, Southern Environment Association and Bunnings.
Some organisations have already started to collect 1 litre cardboard milk cartons that will be used to pot seedlings.
Downtown Eco Therapy is based on the idea that people need to take a break from their stressful jobs and it’s good that
communities are proactive about doing their bit for the environment.
“I think a lot of people who work in downtown Wellington really want to do something for the environment, without
protesting, without a big fuss. The project should make it really easy for people to do something enjoyable that is also
positive for the environment,” says Organiser Ron Eckman.
“We’re hoping for a strong turn-out to back this very worthwhile cause and it should be lots of fun,” Ron says.
“We’re aware that a lot of people who work or live in the CBD are leading busy lives. This provides the benefit of a
break and also allows people to make a contribution quickly and effectively.”
