Climber’s body recovered
The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) has confirmed that the body of a climber was recovered from a steep
ravine south of Mount Cook this afternoon.
The body was spotted today by 33-year old male, from Wellington, who was on a tramp from Barron Saddle to Dobson Valley.
At around 8.00am he saw what looked like a body in the ravine, so climbed down to check. He activated his personal
locator beacon at approximately 8.30am then began ascending the ravine. When he reached the top, about 3 hours later, he
was in sight of the helicopter tasked by the RCCNZ from Aspiring Helicopters, Wanaka.
The deceased is a male of about 60 years of age.
Because of the difficult terrain another helicopter, from The Helicopter Line, Mt Cook, was sent in to recover the body
and tramper. The recovery was assisted by Department of Conservation staff and Police.
Police will release details of the deceased once next of kin have been notified.
