Incident Type: Boat capsized
Police recieved a call this morning from a member of the public who had seen a 4m long boat over turn off the coast near
Tora, on the Waiarapa coast.
The two male occupants of the boat were thrown into the water. None were wearing life jackets.
Due to a heavy swell it took about 20 minutes before a suitable boat could be launched to rescue the men. The men spent
about 30-40 minutes in the water before they were rescued.
The Westpac helicopter from Wellington was called but the men were uplifted by the rescue boat before it arrived. The
helicopter has flown a 70 year old male to Wellington hospital with suspected hypothermia. His condition was described
as stable. The other male did not require any medical treatment. The incident served as yet another warning to check
weather conditions before heading out as well wearing life jackets no matter what the conditions are.
