Latest abortion statistics show that the system is seriously failing women
The latest New Zealand abortion statistics, released today by Statistics New Zealand, show that the number of abortions
performed in New Zealand in 2006 has increased since the 2005 statistics were released.
“The latest figures show that the system is failing New Zealand woman at an alarming rate” says Family Life
International media spokesperson Brendan Malone.
“Each one of these abortions represents serious emotional and physical risks to the lives of the women who have had to
undergo them, and each of these abortions has taken the life of an unborn New Zealander.”
The new figures show that New Zealand women aged 20 – 24 continue to have more abortions than any other age group, and
they also show that the second largest group of women having abortions are those aged 15 – 19 years of age.
“These women and their unborn babies are the real victims of the seriously flawed sex education policies and
philosophies that we continue to promote and encourage in New Zealand” says Brendan Malone.
“Each one of these women has to deal with the hidden grief of abortion, a grief that seems to have become acceptable
collateral damage that is ignored by those who oversee and carry out abortions in New Zealand.”
“These figures are a sobering reminder that abortion remains a serious threat to the health and emotional wellbeing of
New Zealand women and their unborn babies, and that it is time that the New Zealand government did something for Kiwi
women by implementing policies and systems to arrest and reverse the unnecessarily high rate of abortions in New
Zealand” says Brendan Malone.
