Fishing Decision a Welcome One For Workers - CTU
"Government's decision today to set minimum standards for foreign workers in the New Zealand fishing industry will be welcomed by workers in the fishing industry," CTU president Ross Wilson said today.
"The CTU has supported the industry and Government work to set standards to address the low wages and poor conditions which have been highlighted by a number of high profile cases of blatant exploitation."
"We acknowledge the concerns that iwi fishing groups have over the impact this decision may have on their economic viability," Ross Wilson said.
"If these concerns are substantiated the CTU would support discussions to explore possible solutions to ensure the viable development of these indigenous enterprises," he said.
"These measures are an important step towards a sustainable New Zealand fishing industry."
