Corrections' nomination recognises energy efficiency
The efforts of the Department of Corrections in promoting environmental sustainability were again recognised today with
the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority's announcement of their EnergyWise Award finalists.
"As one of the Government's largest organisations Corrections has a responsibility to reduce its impact on the
environment," says Chief Executive Barry Matthews. "The nomination shows that we are on the right track."
"This is recognition of the hard work Corrections has put into ensuring it is a committed, responsible user of
environmental, social, and economic resources," says Mr Matthews. "An achievement that would not be possible without the
dedication and hard work of our highly professional and competent staff."
"Since our five year Energy Management Strategy was approved in 2002, Corrections has achieved a reduction in energy use
of 8.6 % per prisoner. This represents a cost savings of $800,000 in today's dollars. With energy prices increasing, and
as more energy efficiency projects are completed, this figure is projected to reach $1 million by the end of the present
financial year.
"As in everything, Corrections looks to ensure value for money and energy efficiency is one area where our forward
thinking is paying off." Corrections has been nominated in both the Energy Managers section and the Public Sector
category of the Awards.
Last year Corrections received the prestigious Leadership in Operational Sustainability award as part of the Ministry
for the Environment's new Govt3 programme, for its efforts to promote sustainability in government agencies.
