Tauranga candidate has Party’s backing
The National Party says its Tauranga candidate Bob Clarkson has the Party’s backing.
“The Party believes the allegations levelled against Mr Clarkson are baseless. Bob Clarkson has been completely up-front with the Party and we back him 100 percent,” National Party President Judy Kirk says.
Mrs Kirk says questions need to be asked about the timing of the allegations, which come after public polls showing there could be a change in Tauranga.
“Bob Clarkson is a larger than life, earthy personality. He is a bit of a hard case and very popular in his electorate. Bob has been campaigning hard since his selection late last year.
“However, I do think it was unwise of him to have made the comment he did in front of a reporter last night, even if it was intended as a joke. I have now spoken to him about this.”
Mrs Kirk said Mr Clarkson is seeking legal advice and therefore the Party would not be making any further comment.
