Maori Roll Doubles in 11 Years
The Maori Party candidate for Tainui is buoyed by the release of figures showing 200,000 people are now on the Maori
roll.
“This is an historic moment,” said Ms Greensill. “The Maori roll has almost doubled since 1994 and Maori are ready to
exercise our voting muscle.”
“We all have two votes so Maori voters have 720,000 votes on election day. As the nation has come to realise this, the
other parties have never wanted to look so generous.”
Ms Greensill is encouraged by news yesterday that she is in the leading position to win the Tainui electorate.
We’re already planning for the 2006 Maori Option where we already have the numbers for an eighth Maori seat. The Party
will be campaigning at that time to have as many as 11 Maori seats for the 2008 election.”
“We are looking ahead and planning for the long haul. It’s the Maori vote that will decide the outcome of the election
and it’s good to be the only Party standing for the kaupapa of the Treaty.”
At the beginning of the Maori Option in 1994 104,000 Maori were on the Maori roll.
By the end of the 1994 Option this figure increased to 136,000
