MFAT London Bombing Update

Published: Tue 12 Jul 2005 09:24 AM
The New Zealand High Commission in London spent Monday continuing to track down New Zealanders whose families have enquired about them, reporting responses back to the Ministry for follow up. Of the 2100 on the database, over 1500 are now accounted for, with enquries still out on 600. The number of persons about whom there are serious concerns remains at 1.
On Monday, the High Commissioner met the family of the young woman for whom there are serious concerns. The family continue to ask that their privacy be respected.
The Metropolitan Police released a statement confirming one fatality today. The High Commission does not anticipate further statements being made during the London night - i.e. we do not/not expect any further news during the New Zealand day today.
The High Commissioner is to sign the Book of Remembrance at City Hall on Tuesday (1930 NZ Time tonight)
The London High Commission plans to close its crisis room on Tuesday. This will not affect the enquiry number (+44 20 7930 8422). The Ministry 0800 number remains in operation for the moment (0800 432 111).
We repeat earlier advice: we are asking for New Zealanders to call in if they have been unable to contact directly someone they believed to have been in London at the time. We also want call backs from those who have reported such a case but have since made contact with that individual. There is no need to call in about people who have been in touch unless they were previously reported as out of contact.
