Support for Striking Waterside Workers
The Council of Trade Unions is backing strike action by Auckland watersiders against casual and part-time work in favour
of secure, permanent jobs, CTU president Ross Wilson said today.
Members of the Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) working for Ports of Auckland began a four-day strike this morning
over casualisation on the wharves.
Ross Wilson has written to the union’s president, Denis Carlisle, asking him to convey the full support and solidarity
of the CTU’s 34 affiliated unions, representing more than 300,000 workers, to the striking MUNZ members.
“Permanent employment gives workers and their families the security they are entitled to,” he said. “Casual work
undermines that security, affecting family life and the health of workers, as well as safety on the job.”
