Christchurch Shoppers Warned Off GE Foods
Christchurch shoppers were warned about foods containing genetically engineered ingredients when local activists
undertook a GE food education exercise in a city supermarket this evening.
A group of locals opposed to GE food placed warning labels on products containing GE ingredients and constructed
displays highlighting foods that customers should avoid, at Pak N Save, Moorhouse Avenue, Christchurch.
Police were called after staff were alerted to their presence, but following a confrontation between activists and
security, the activists narrowly evaded arrest.
“Many New Zealanders are realising that it’s time to take practical steps to keep GE out of our foodchain and our
environment.” Said group spokesperson Duncan Eddy
“GE foods still sit unlabelled on supermarket shelves, which is, quite simply, unacceptable. Couple this with a high
level of discontent over the lifting of the GE moratorium, and you can expect to see a lot more citizen initiated direct
action against GE food and crops.”
Tonight’s activity was the latest in a series of anti GE actions carried out around the country following the PMEA GE
Free Direct Action Training Camp in Motueka earlier this month. Similar actions have received favourable reaction from
consumers.
“It’s not surprising that people are opposed to having new and untested genetically mutated organisms in their food.
Once comprehensive GE food labelling is introduced the bottom will fall out of the GE market.” Said Eddy.
