"The wheels of progress turn slowly but turn they do," says Lindsay Mitchell, petitioner for a Parliamentary review of
the DPB. "The complexion of the incoming Parliament is significantly changed from our perspective. Outspoken advocates
for the DPB, Alliance's Liz Gordon and Laila Harre have disappeared. Bob Simcock, National's Social Services spokesman
and supporter of the DPB has gone."
"Replacing these MP's are colleagues of Peter Dunne, one of the few MP's who has expressed support for a review of the
DPB. We hope he will achieve his 'Commission for the Family' and it will include an objective appraisal of the role of
current social policy in the breakdown of New Zealand families," comments Mitchell.
"Our petition has also been met positively by some NZ First MP's," adds Mitchell, "And Mr Brash's views about welfare
dependency are well known."
"But perhaps the most exciting addition to the debating chamber is ACT's Deborah Coddington. As a leading journalist,
she has been a strong and influential advocate for children's rights and welfare reform."
"We will be writing to all incoming MP's to reiterate our convictions about a benefit that has been instrumental in the
phenomenal growth of the single parent family and the associated child poverty. The climate for real change has markedly
improved."
