International Working Women’s Day – March 8

The media is invited to the following union events marking International Working Women’s Day, focussed on low paid women workers and working women’s lives.
Wellington - Get a Life!
7pm - 9.30pm at Loaves and Fishes
(next to Anglican Cathedral, cnr Hill and Molesworth Sts.)
- Panel of speakers from political parties and the Council of Trade Unions, led by Minister of Women’s Affairs, Laila Harre.
- Women’s choirs, Choir, Choir, Pants on Fire and Brazen Hussies.
Women workers talking about their lives.
Auckland - Women and men rally to end inequality
6pm, Freyberg Square, near High Street, Auckland City
- Speakers: Darien Fenton, vice president of the Council of Trade Unions and Sandra Coney, women’s health activist.
- Union Made Choir and open mike.
International Working Women’s Day
On 8 March 1857, in one of the first organised actions by working women anywhere in the world, hundreds of women workers in garment and textile factories in New York City staged a strike against low wages, long working hours and inhumane working conditions.
