The GE Free Hikoi left Kaitaia on the first of October, and has been making its way down the North Island.
The marchers observed the local tradition of fasting as they travelled between Turangi and Waiouru, and were blessed
with perfect weather. Their stay at the beautiful marae at Rata on Monday night included a tour of the marae museum.
The Hikoi has been well supported with food and accommodation, and the walkers and organisers give their grateful thanks
to the many who have assisted them on their way.
Thanks also to the drivers and travellers who are slowing to pass the Hikoi safely, tooting to support a GE free nation,
and often breaking their journey to briefly join the Hikoi or leave koha of organic food.
The Hikoi will be staying in Palmerston North on the 24th & 25th, then will move on to Shannon for the night of the 26th. On the 27th, the walkers will pass through Levin and
after two nights in Otaki will continue to Porirua on the 29th. The night of the 30th will be spent at Island Bay, and
the final march through Wellington to Parliament will take place on the 31st of October.
Now we need a huge turn out in Wellington on the 31st to give the government a clear message that our environment must
be kept free of genetically engineered organisms.
