ANIMAL ACTIVISTS TO HIT FACTORY FARM
Sunday April 15th
Animal rights activists from all over the country will converge on a local battery egg farm for a national demonstration against factory farming.
The protesters will be at Golden Gate Poultry farm, Corner of State Highway 58 and Mulherns Road, Pauahatanui, at 1pm today. More than 50 activists are expected and confrontations with the farmer are likely.
Mark Eden from Wellington Animal Action, says direct action is likely at the protest today. Millions of hens are confined in cages for their entire lives in battery farms and anyone who is involved in the cruelty of factory farming has got to expect severe disruption to their business. The law has failed to protect animals so we have to take action ourselves to force factory farmers out of business.
"Factory farming is the number one animal rights issue in the country. The vast majority of the public want battery hen cages banned. Last week there was a public outcry over the revelation that a Tegel factory in New Plymouth was throwing thousands of day old chicks into a mincing machine. All factory farming is based on massive cruelty for the sake of profit and yet the majority of the public do not support factory farming at all. We think the abolition of factory farming is a realistic aim".
Animal rights activists from all over the country and several overseas countries have just finished a two day activist conference in the Hutt valley. Groups attending the conference include Animal Watch Aotearoa, Animal Action groups, Law Students for Animal Rights, the New Zealand Anti Vivisection Society, The Vegan Society and Save Animals From Exploitation.
The protesters will be at Golden Gate Egg farm, Corner of State Highway 58 and Mulherns Road, Pauahatanui, at 1pm today. More than 50 activists are expected and confrontations with the farmer are likely.
